• Species-Specific Information
Zanpakuto's Name:
Shizukana Zetsumei. (Rough Translation: Silent Death.)
Level:
Shikai.
Lieutenant of Squad 11.
Zanpakuto Abilities:
Appearance - The normal appearance of Rin's Zanpakuto is that of a katana, like all default weapons of the Shinigami. It has the square hilt and wrapped handle, attached to the steel blade which is usually concealed by her scabbard. Rin is exceptionally fast at retrieving her blade from its sheath in battle and and is well known for her speed: she appears to be unarmed one second and with bare blade the next. Translation - she is a master at Iaigitsu. Rin's personal accessory to the blade is a cord of black string that hangs in a short braid from the end of the hilt.
Shikai - "Shizukana Zetsumei, Tazusawaru!" (Rough Translation: Silent Death, (the verb to-) Engage!)
When Rin releases Shikai she grips her hilt in both hands and pulls a clone of her blade from the original. As soon as she holds two, the blades decrease in size and mirrors of them appear from the bottom of their hilts. She now holds two hilts with blades protruding from each end (four blades in total). Placing one hilt over the other they merge together to create a cross that she then throws at her opponent in a boomerang fashion. This performance happens very quickly so that she doesn't ever really use two swords - it's only every her Zanpakuto or her cross.
Bankai - Rin has yet to release her Bankai
• Appearance
Play-by:
Kuchiha - Amatsuki
Appearance:
Rin is reasonably tall for a girl, standing at around 5 foot 8 inches. She's strong, toned and has the figure many would die for with a slim stomach and lush curves above and below it. She has long legs and strong, defined shoulder muscles. One of the main characteristics of her appearance is her hair. Rin's tresses are pitch black and run to her waist. She has shorter bangs around her face and a thick braid on the left (her left) side of her face, while the rest hangs in a ponytail. She removes the band that holds her hair back when she sleeps but no-one ever sees her with her hair as such. It's a show of feminine vulnerability which she doesn't allow.
Though she would likely be considered as gorgeous by most, Rin is never considered as attractive by anyone who knows who she is. They are put off by her attitude and personality and somehow her stance and aura stop anyone from seeing her actual physical appearance.
• History/Personality
Family Members:
Ojii-san - Ojii-san is the only person Rin has ever felt close to. She continues to keep her vow to him of never changing unless she wants to (aka she has continued to remain silent), and keeps a small journal he once gave her in order to record her thoughts. She has also never cut her hair since his death, leading to its excessive length now.
Short Biography:
Rin's was born in the Soul Society, but her biological birth is unknown. In a far district of Rukongai, on the extreme edges of the slums, Rin was found, as a young child by a river (leading to her surname later becoming Kawaguchi, meaning "the mouth of the river"). The young couple who found her took her to their home in the slums and attempted to raise her as their own. However, the fact that she never spoke and would stare constantly led to a natural distance and lack of affection between Rin her would-be parents. When she appeared the age of about nine, Rin left the house and did not go back. The couple who had adopted her looked for her for a few weeks but, in the end, gave up without great sorrow. Never speaking, never communicating or showing emotion meant that Rin caused others to become defensive or distant as a form of self-preservation; her aura was creepy and appeared to be dangerous as she would stare with cool eyes at everything around her.
Wandering the streets, Rin was found by an old man who introduced himself to her as Oji-san. He was unafraid of her muteness and did nothing to force her to speak as others had before. Instead, he took her to his home where his son ran a karate and judo doujo.
It took several years but, around the time when she looked 13, Rin began to interact with those at the doujo. One day she simply got up from her position of sitting in a corner watching and stood before one of the other students - a boy about a foot taller than herself. There was a moment of confusion as those around her looked at each other, then at the man who ran the school, Kazuko, who, in turn, looked to his father - the old man who had taken Rin in. Rin, frowning, clapped her hands and everyone's attention moved back to her. She dropped into a fighting stance all of the students had been taught, in front of her, over and over again. The other boy, looking awkward, mirrored her movements. Rin waiting for him to attack her. When he did, she was sent flying. She got up, moved back into position and set her stance again. This time the boy went to attack but with half his strength so as to not hurt the young girl in front of him. Suddenly, she reached up and caught his fist. Holding it there, Rin shook her head and ran backwards so that they were apart by the same distance again. Rin raised a hand and motioned for him to come forward. Kazuko's father spoke up, stating that he believed the young girl knew when her opponent wasn't using all of his strength and disapproved of it. The fight went on but after Rin had been sent to the ground about ten times she started sending her opponent down to the tatami, every single time. After the young boy had hit the floor as many times as she had she walked away and sat in her corner again.
The man who had become like an adoptive grandfather to Rin was surprised but spoke with his son about her. He described how he had the strong suspicion that Rin had been learning and training on her own, and had only fallen so many times at the start of the fight in order to learn her opponents moves.
As the days went on, Rin silently challenged each of the boys in the class and steadily beat them all, proving the old man's theory correct. She had rusty technique that quickly became perfect as her mind, that had so carefully cataloged away the moves of the boys in class, kicked in. She was also adept at balance and using her size or opponents weight to her advantage. She soon became a skilled and hard-to-beat fighter.
As she interacted more, however, her silence and lack of personal engagement became more obvious to the others in the class. The spectator had now become a participant, yet she still didn't talk or interact. No-one would outwardly bully the girl, but she was kept as an outsider. One day, her "grandfather" spoke with her and asked her why she never spoke. Rin had shrugged her shoulders. The old man had asked - "Don't you want to hear the sound of your own voice?" Rin had shook her head. Ojii-san (for this was what everyone called him, and what Rin referred to him as in her head), had suddenly smiled. "Okay then." He had told her. "It's only your opinion that matters Rin. If you don't want to speak then you don't have to." Reaching out, he had laid the palm of his hand against her cheek. "You are perfectly fine exactly the way you are. Don't change unless you want to okay?" Rin had smiled slightly for the first time, and nodded. And she has continued to never say a word since. Instead, she communicates through highly practiced body language, facial expression and hand gestures.
When Rin had matured into her nineteen-looking self she stopped growing and when she hit the age of 36 Ojii-san passed away. As he was the only person to have made a significat impression or affectionate connection with Rin, Rin soon after left the doujo.
Travelling from one place to another, over and over, Rin worked odd jobs, stole, starved - anything that was appropriate at the time. She didn't much understand that people lived for more than simple existence until she reached the the busier districts of Rukongai.
It was in one of these districts that Rin first caught a glance at the gates of Seireitei through which she saw, several times, Shinigami in black and white pass through. Though silent and never voicing her desires, Rin has a curious nature which led to her wondering what was inside the walls. From listening she learnt that only Shinigamis were allowed inside and therefore set her sights on becoming one.
At the Shinigami Academy testing, Rin was allowed in for her impressive Spirit Energy and she soon learned quickly. Her distance and muteness blocked people out before her class could so she was never penalised for where she had come from. Instead she simply kept her head down, worked hard and joined the Gotei 13 after graduation.
For many decades, Rin worked in the 2nd Squad under the Special Ops division as an under-cover fighter and an assassin. With her lack of affection or connection to anyone through empathy or sympathy she was a fantastic, and deadly silent killer.
However, she has now been transferred and promoted to the rank of Lieutenant in the 11th Squad where she has replaced a recently killed seat. Rin still communicates in many ways others than her voice. She personally doesn't know why she has never spoken and attributes it to her mind shutting out something traumatic in the first years of her life that she now cannot remember. She has also got to the point where opening her mouth and attempting to speak is a difficulty, as she is so very used to communicating otherwise. Everyone around her has taken on the belief that Rin actually cannot physically speak, even if she wanted to, which Rin doesn't know to be true or not as she has never tried but as she can whistle, snap her fingers, clap her hands and click her tongue there are far more interesting ways in which she can speak with others.
Personality:
Rin is an intensely private person. She never expresses herself to others, not through a sense of superiority but simply due to the fact that she does not feel close enough to anyone to do so. She also has an ingrained sense of personal worthlessness; as in she does not feel that anyone would be interested or would want to know what she thinks and feels. This is mostly due to the fact that no-one (minus Ojii-san) has ever taken an enthusiastic interest in her life. The fact that this was her own fault in the sense that her silence puts people off, doesn't matter. Because she never expresses herself verbally, Rin is often overly emotional in her facial expressions - i.e. she often looks excessively depressed, thoughtful or irritated, because she has too many thoughts and feelings kept inside. This leads to her, often, writing in a small hardback journal. The journal entries aren't whimsical or gushing but simple sentences and thoughts that she stores away so that her mind doesn't feel too full.
When it comes to work-ethic Rin has a strong pressure for being the best placed on herself. Since her doujo days when she watched students being yelled at and encouraged she has felt the need to succeed. She is never happier than when she is hot, sweaty, cut up and aching from physical practice as she feels a strong connection with the outer-world when her physical existence is highlighted so obviously. When it comes to others, Rin is infuriated by those who don't put as much effort in as she does but, at the same time, does no interfere, encourage or punish them unless told to, as she is a strong believer in the idea of merit and effort: she says nothing to them because she believes that they will not succeed or rise in rank through pathetic effort and that this is enough punishment.
As a person Rin has a strong sense of loyalty within herself; if someone is kind to her they will have her loyalty (if not her affection) for life. However, she does not insist, or expect, anyone to do the same for her - they can do whatever they like. Rin is never emotionally attached to or affectionate to others. She has never had a relationship with a man, despite her many years of existence and she does not intend to. She is excessively lonely but, at the same time, has lived in this habit and routine for so long that the idea of changing no longer occurs to her - she wouldn't know how to go about becoming social even if she wanted to. Instead, she finds that the easiest way to interact with others is to have them interested in her - to respect her. So, she has worked up the ranks to get to where she is now in a sort of attention-seeking method.
Rin is a calm and quiet person who, due to her lack of emotional entanglement, can make clear cut judgments and decisions at critical times. She also, however, has no mercy. To have mercy one has to have empathy for the person they are being merciful to, and, as Rin does not understand others, nor interact, nor have excessive emotions of her own, she has no empathy and therefore no mercy to the point where it's scary even to her comrades. She is the perfect killer but a seriously defective individual.
